About

Dr. Vijay Kumar Vijayan is a mass communication scholar and a passionate media professional. He has more than one and half decade of industrial experience in audio-visual content development, production including direction, supervision and management in senior roles. Right from television reality shows to non-fiction live broadcast, from television commercials to feature films, he worked in various projects in different capacities. This, in turn, has strengthened his knowledge and understanding about the audio-visual medium.

Additionally, he has eight years of higher education teaching experience as an adjunct faculty (Part time) at the department of Visual Communication, Patrician College of Arts and Science, Chennai, affiliated to University of Madras.

Currently, he is working as a teaching faculty at Xavier School of Communications, Xavier University Bhubaneswar. His teaching interests are Television Studies, Television Production (Theory & Practice), Film Studies, Digital Film Making and Mass Communication Theories. His research interests are Television Programming, Interactive Digital Communication, Mediated Communication, Audience Analysis and Digital Marketing.

Work Experience

Prior joining Xavier University Bhubaneswar, Dr. Vijay Kumar Vijayan was working as a senior creative and content at the programming department of Shop CJ Network at Mumbai.

He was the creative head and show director of ‘Naalaya Iyakunar’ (Future Director), an award-winning Tamil television reality talent hunt show for budding film makers, which was telecast on Kalaingar TV and ‘Iruvar’ (Twins), South Indian’s first reality television show for identical twins on Vendhar TV. Earlier, he worked for Sun TV Network as programming manager and successfully led their Kannada language general entertainment channel, Udaya TV and was instrumental in launching Kushi TV – the Telugu language kids channel.

He also worked with Frames Entertainment, as an executive producer, involved in creating various audio-visual projects for their clients like Walt Disney, Warner Bros, 20th Century Fox and Turner Network (Cartoon Network). He was a former creative associate of a Malayalam language musical reality talent hunt show 'Voice of Kerala', which was telecast on Surya TV. He is a former programme producer and radio jockey at Anna FM (CR) 90.4 Mhz. His academic interest led him to work as a teaching faculty at the Department of Visual Communication at Sathyabama University, Chennai. He worked as a director/associate director at Black Box Films, an ad film production house based in Chennai. He also worked in a cross over Indian English feature film 'The Red Ribbon'. Earlier, he worked as a producer/creative director at Ideaz Media and assistant director at UTV Motion Pictures.

Education

Dr. Vijay Kumar Vijayan completed his doctoral research and earned his PhD degree in Media Science from Anna University, Chennai. His research thesis is on ‘Reality Television and its Effects on TV Content, Audience and the Industry’.

He did Master of Philosophy in Journalism and Mass Communication from Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai and his research dissertation is on ‘Film Reviews and the Formation of Audience Attitudes’. He did his post-graduation degree in Electronic Media from the Department of Media Sciences, Anna University, Chennai and also, he has additional master’s degree in Visual Communication from Bharathiar University, Coimbatore and Advertising and Public Relation from Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai respectively.

He graduated from Loyola College (Autonomous), Chennai; affiliated to University of Madras with Visual Communication. His interest in academics made him to hold University Grants Commission’s (India) National eligibility test for lectureship and Tamil Nadu state eligibility test for lectureship qualifications in Journalism and Mass Communication subject. He also did certificate course in Digital Marketing from Edupristine, Mumbai. Diploma in General Arts from Santhanu’s Chitira Vidyalam, Chennai and diploma in Multimedia and Web Master from Loyola Institute of Business Administration Informatics Centre, Chennai.
